Gracie's Wish Story

06/03/2023

Mum Kelly Power heard about Dreams & Wishes while she was staying with her daughter Gracie during one of their many visits.

It was Christmas time and the charity’s team of volunteers were touring hospitals across south Wales to deliver presents with the help of Santa Claus.

“Gracie was born with a chromosome deficiency which was picked up when she was 10 months old,” explains Kelly.  “She has spent a lot of time in hospital and on one of our stays we met the team from Dreams & Wishes with Santa. Gracie has met him several times now and believes he is the real deal. We went to a show after one of the Christmas parties and there was another Santa there and she was saying ‘not him’.

"One of the volunteers gave me a number for the charity and told me to get in touch."

Gracie is non-verbal and her mum was told she might never walk or talk

Gracie's Story

The determined seven-year-old does understand some sign language, can walk short distances and loves meeting new people. Which is why the whole family enjoys going to the parties that the charity organises at Halloween, Christmas and in the summer.

Kelly says: “I was a bit worried about going along to the first event we were invited to because of Gracie’s needs, but we were so welcomed and felt really included right from the start. And it is not just Gracie, they get the whole family involved. My other daughter Evie has been to several of the parties, and everyone has made sure that she has been involved right from the start too. That is so important because she has missed out on so much growing up.

"The volunteers are great with Gracie and we all have a fantastic time.”

The charity also organised for the whole family to spend a week on holiday in Porthcawl thanks to a wish organised for the family so they could enjoy time together away from some of the pressures at home.

Kelly says: “It was great for us all to be able to spend that special time together. I am a single mum, so it is hard to organise time away and to be able to spend a week together on holiday was really precious to us all. Precious memories for us all to have.”
